RIDM 2023: In the Shadow of Light (by Isabel Reyes and Ignacia Merino) | Review

In the Shadow of Light artfully illuminates the paradoxical darkness cast by progress, as directors Isabel Reyes and Ignacia Merino deliver a haunting and electrifying portrayal of a Chilean village ensnared in the relentless hum of a towering power plant.

In the Shadow of Light (A la sombra de la luz), the feature debut of Isabel Reyes and Ignacia Merino, whihch premiered at Sheffield Docfest 2023, powerfully captures the complex interplay between progress and human sacrifice in a small Chilean village. Presented at the 26th Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM), the documentary delves deep into the lives of Charrúa’s residents, in Chile, who exist in the perpetual shadow of a massive power plant.

The film skillfully portrays the village’s struggle, where the promise of progress, represented by the towering power plant, paradoxically leaves its inhabitants in a state of perpetual darkness. The metaphorical resonance is palpable – the relentless hum of electricity becomes an omnipresent, insidious force, as the narrative unfolds against a backdrop of frequent blackouts and a continuous static hum.

Reyes and Merino employ a deft observational approach, allowing the audience to witness the daily lives of the community. From a child hunting rabbits to residents demanding improved electrical coverage at town meetings, the film captures the essence of a community held captive by forces beyond their control. The use of a local radio station relaying daily occurrences adds a layer of authenticity to the narrative.

As night falls, the documentary takes a mesmerizing turn, capturing wildlife illuminated momentarily by strange bursts of light, highlighting the stark contrast between nature and the intrusive presence of pylons and cables. The directors skillfully blend elements of genre and experimental film to create a unique and impactful cinematic experience.

The power plant, while a symbol of progress, becomes a looming threat to the very community it is supposed to serve. The residents, portrayed as voiceless against those who control the plant, embody the inherent power imbalances in society.

In the Shadow of Light stands as an electrifying observational documentary. Reyes and Merino’s film is a masterful blend of stark reality, metaphorical depth, and cinematic innovation, leaving a lasting impression on those who bear witness to the haunting interplay of light and darkness in the Chilean backcountry.
