Montclair Film Festival 2024: Small Things Like These | Interview with Tim Mielants

We met Tim Mielants, director of Small Things Like These, at the 2024 Montclair Film Festival, where his film poignantly explores Ireland’s recent history, collective guilt, and moral courage through the eyes of a grieving father, played by Cillian Murphy.

Small Things Like These, directed by Tim Mielants, is a poignant adaptation of Claire Keegan’s novel of the same name. Set in a small Irish town in the 1980s, the film delves into universal themes such as guilt, redemption, and moral courage through the story of Bill Furlong, a coal merchant who uncovers a dark secret at the local convent.

We had the pleasure of chatting with Tim Mielants, who elaborated on adapting this delicate story and the importance of small acts of kindness. “What drew me to this story is its apparent simplicity and the depth of emotions it evokes,” he explained. “It’s a tribute to those small acts of bravery that can change lives.”

Mielants also discussed the challenge of staying true to the essence of the novel while bringing his own cinematic vision to it. “Claire Keegan’s book is very visual in its storytelling, which made the transition to film easier. However, it was crucial to capture the atmosphere and subtle tension that permeates the text,” he said. “We worked closely with the author to ensure that each scene reflected the emotional intensity of the book.”

A central aspect of the film is Cillian Murphy’s performance as Bill Furlong. Mielants praised Murphy’s commitment to embodying this complex character. “He managed to convey Bill’s inner struggle with remarkable authenticity. His performance adds an extra layer of depth to the story,” the director noted.

Mielants expressed his gratitude for the audience’s reactions at the Montclair Film Festival. “Viewers were deeply moved by Bill’s story. Many mentioned how the film made them reflect on their own actions and the impact of small things in daily life,” he recounted.

In addition to its positive reception at the Montclair Film Festival, the film has been praised for its introspective exploration of human condition and moral choices. As Mielants put it, “It’s a story about the power of compassion and empathy, and how these qualities can drive us to act even in the toughest situations.”
