Sheffield DocFest 2024: Beyond Words (by Kim Brand) | Review

In Beyond Words, director Kim Brand captures the profound, wordless connections forged between choir singers and nursing home residents. The short film premiered at Sheffield DocFest 2024.

In her short film Beyond Words, which debuted at Sheffield DocFest 2024, director Kim Brand delicately captures singers from a choir in the Netherlands. Using their voices and gestures, these singers attempt to connect with residents of a nursing home, or at least elicit a reaction from these elderly individuals who have lost their sense of language. These compassionate singers are working against the grain of modern societies, where our elders are often neglected.

The direct cinema approach is complemented by on-camera testimonials from the singers, who explain their intentions and motivations. “[…] Nobody can deny that there is a physical […] feeling of right and left and back and forward. So, in place of what I want reality to be, can I accept reality for what it is,” shares one of the singers. By stimulating the senses—hearing, touch—they manage to evoke a smile, an emotion, a hug from their audience, bringing them out of their daily lethargy.

In Beyond Words, Kim Brand has succeeded in capturing the beauty of these intergenerational moments. Her camera lingers on hands keeping the tempo of a melody, on a kiss exchanged between two generations. These moments transcend the passage of time, demonstrating that beyond language, there exists a multitude of ways to communicate, to connect, to give.
