Tribeca 2024: David Again | Interview with Adam Elliott
We were delighted to interview director Adam Elliott who presented his latest short documentary film, David Again, at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival. The film explores the life of New Yorker David Dennis, focusing on his struggle with and recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, and his enduring friendship with actor Jon Cryer.
Adam Elliott recounts how he met David Denis, his neighbor in Inwood, Manhattan. Struck by David’s friendliness and unique personality, Elliott was compelled to document his story. During their initial conversation, David shared his history of addiction and recovery, which Elliott found profoundly moving. This conversation led to the creation of the documentary.
Elliott discovered David’s close friendship with Jon Cryer, which began in their youth and significantly influenced Cryer’s career. David inspired the character Duckie in Pretty in Pink, and Cryer had previously produced a film about their friendship. This aspect of David’s life became a central theme in David Again.
David actively participated in the documentary’s production and saw an early cut of the film. Tragically, he passed away during the making of the film. Despite this, David’s family and Jon Cryer encouraged Elliott to complete the project. Cryer, who was deeply affected by David’s death, continued with the scheduled interview, celebrating David’s life rather than solely mourning his loss.

The documentary emphasizes David’s achievements in overcoming addiction, his dedication to service, and the meaningful relationships he maintained. Elliott shares how the project was transformative for him, shifting his focus from personal vanity projects to highlighting other people’s inspiring stories. This experience taught him the importance of listening and being open to others’ narratives.
Elliott’s relationship with David began as neighbors and evolved into a deep friendship, which added authenticity and depth to the documentary. The film highlights the remarkable lifelong friendship between David and Jon Cryer, showcasing how personal bonds can shape and inspire. David’s influence on Jon Cryer’s career, particularly inspiring the character Duckie, is a unique and touching element of the story. The documentary serves as a celebration of David’s life and his triumph over addiction, focusing on his positive impact rather than just his struggles. Through making David Again, Elliott experienced significant personal and artistic growth, learning to prioritize meaningful stories over self-focused projects.
