Tribeca 2025: A Bright Future | Interview with Lucía Garibaldi

Director Lucía Garibaldi told us how her creative instincts led her to a sci-fi dystopia, premiering at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival.

As part of our exclusive coverage of the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival, I had the pleasure of speaking with Lucía Garibaldi, director of A Bright Future, which is set to premiere in the festival’s Viewpoints section in New York City.

The feature film follows Lisa, an intelligent and curious young woman who takes a job up north—only to discover that no one who goes there ever comes back… Reflecting on her growing presence on the festival circuit, Garibaldi expressed surprise that her work resonates so strongly with U.S. audiences: “I don’t know why in the U.S. my films make some kind of sense… but it’s awesome.” She added that premiering in New York is especially meaningful since her partner and close friends live there, making Tribeca feel personal and emotional.

Garibaldi shared with me that A Bright Future didn’t begin as a sci-fi project. The idea emerged from a personal moment of vulnerability—walking alone at night and feeling unsafe, despite loving the atmosphere: “It’s unfair that I can’t appreciate that… because it’s not secure here.” This reflection led her to imagine what life might feel like as the last young woman left on Earth, a notion that eventually evolved into a dystopian narrative, more out of necessity than intent.

Though she enjoys sci-fi as a viewer, she hadn’t planned to make a genre film. The concept of isolation and vulnerability shaped the tone and world of the story.

I was delighted to gain insight into Garibaldi’s intuitive and emotionally grounded creative process. Don’t miss the interview.
