San Sebastian IFF 2024Spotlight: Female and Non-Binary Filmmakers

San Sebastian 2024: Glimmers (by Pilar Palomero) | Review

Glimmers is a poignant exploration of family, mortality, and the delicate dance between sorrow and fleeting joy, masterfully depicted by Pilar Palomero and brought to life through Patricia López Arnaiz’s award-winning performance.

Death is inevitable, but one cannot predict how and when it will happen, thus bringing to the fore the complexities of family life. This theme is explored in Goya Award-winning director Pilar Palomero’s third feature, Los destellos / Glimmers (Spain). The film won Patricia López Arnaiz the Silver Shell for Best Leading Performance at the 72nd San Sebastian International Film Festival. Palomero’s earlier films were Schoolgirls (2020) and Motherhood (2022).

Based on the short story A Heart Too Big by Eider Rodríguez, the story delves into family relationships and makes us ponder how we deal with relationships and reflect on the past as we witness the death of a family member.

Isabel’s (Patricia López Arnaiz) life takes an unexpected turn when her daughter Madalen (Marina Guerola) requests her to visit Ramón (Antonio De la Torre), her ex-husband, who is extremely ill. After being divorced for fifteen years, Isabel feels a strain in their relationship as they have drifted apart and become practically strangers. As she tends to her ex-husband, she realizes how much she resented him and finds fault with everything they had lived through.

Palomero describes the journey of being there for a loved one until the end. She captures all aspects of that process—the moments of sorrow and fleeting joy, the effort to bid farewell in a fitting manner, and the aftermath of a death—what once was but now is not, what might have been but will never be, and everything that goes with the departed individual.

The movie also explores the potential of human kindness and the ability of individuals to show genuine support for others. Despite the romance between Isabel and her daughter’s father ending on a negative note, she chooses to reconcile and support him through his journey towards death, disregarding their past conflicts.

The film’s great successes include the subtlety in the portrayal of the twisted sentimental relationship. The closeness and truth portrayed by the main cast contribute to the human element present in the film. The director captures moments of sadness and fleeting joy with tenderness, delicacy, and heartbreaking beauty, as the past moves away and the present leaves, leaving behind a future that will never be. Ultimately, the movie is simply a portrayal of life and death, depicting both the fragile moments of existence and the proximity of death.

Produced by top Spanish producers MOD Producciones, Misent Producciones, and Inicia Films, Glimmers is a poignant, powerful, and exquisite movie that delves deeply into the concept of mortality and the perpetual cycle of existence.

We are delighted to be reporting live from the 72nd San Sebastian International Film Festival, running on September 20-28, 2024 in Spain.
