Cannes Film Festival 2022: Interview of Kay Niuyue Zhang, director of ‘Mother in the Mist’

We interviewed DGA Student Film Award Winning director Kay Niuyue Zhang about her short film Mother in the Mist, showcased at the American Pavillion during the 75th Cannes Film Festival.

The Cannes Film Festival is a great place to discover new talents: gems can be found in competition, at special screenings, in the festival’s parallel sections, as well as at emerging filmmakers’ showcases. Chinese-American filmmaker Kay Niuyue Zhang presented her DGA Student Film Award Winning short Mother in the Mist at the American Pavillion, where it swept another award. After premiering at the 2021 San Diego International Film Festival, the short film written, directed and produced by USC Graduate Kay Niuyue Zhang received big recognition across the film festival circuit.

Following Wuhan’s Coronavirus lockdown, a rural single mother, Zhao, embarks on a dangerous journey in search of her preemie newborn baby stranded in Wuhan City Hospital. Joining her path is a mysterious eight-year-old girl, who shares the same determination to reunite with her mother in the city.

We were excited to sit down with the talented and fun filmmaker, for a chat about her work on Mother in the Mist, and upcoming projects as director and producer.

Mehdi Balamissa

Mehdi Balamissa is a Franco-Moroccan documentary film passionate who lives in Montreal, Canada. Mehdi has held key positions in programming, communication, and partnerships at various festivals worldwide, including Doc Edge, the Austin Film Festival, FIPADOC, and RIDM. In 2019, he founded Film Fest Report to promote independent cinema from all backgrounds, which led him to have the pleasure of working alongside incredibly talented and inspiring collaborators.
