BUFF Malmö Film Festival 2022: ‘The Path’ Interview

We sat down with Tobias Wiemann (director) and Jytte-Merle Böhrnsen (co-writer and actress) for a chat about The Path (Germany, 2021), winner of the City of Malmö Award for Best Children’s Film at the 2022 BUFF Film Festival.

The 2022 edition of BUFF Malmö Film Festival just came to an end (19-25 March 2022) after celebrating films dealing with children and teenagers. As the most important screening venue for films for children and young people in the Nordic countries (read our interview with Head of Programming Daniel Lundquist), the festival presented a rich program including titles such as Yuni (dir. Kamila Andini), Medusa (dir. Anita Rocha Da Silveira), Shabu (dir. Shamira Raphaëla), Playground (dir. Laura Wandel), Sisterhood (dir. Dina Duma), Olga (dir. Elie Grappe), A Tale of Love and Desire (dir. Leyla Bouzid), or I Am Zlatan (dir. Jens Sjögren), the opening night film.

Among the program was The Path, a German production from Eyrie Entertainment, directed by Tobias Wiemann, and centering on Rolf and Nuria, two children on the run from the Nazis during WW2. Rolf and his father first find themselves stranded in southern France, when the young shepherd girl Nuria offers to guide them along a secret path through the Pyrenees. But when Rolf’s father gets then arrested halfway, the two kids have to make it on their own.

The Path was awarded the prestigious City of Malmö Award for Best Children’s Film at BUFF Malmö 2022. A few hours after the film’s triumph, we were delighted to sit down with director Tobias Wiemann and co-writer and actress Jytte-Merle Böhrnsen to reflect on the making of the film and its messages.

Many thanks to the team of BUFF Malmö Film Festival for having us covering the festival from Malmö, Sweden.
