Cannes 2021: Zero Fucks Given | Interview of Emmanuel Marre & Julie Lecoustre
We met Directors Emmanuel Marre and Julie Lecoustre, the filmmakers behind Zero Fucks Given (Rien à foutre), starring Adèle Exarchopoulos, and presented at the 2021 Critics’ Week.
We were delighted to meet a promising filmmaking duo at the Plage Nespresso in Cannes: Emmanuel Marre and Julie Lecoustre presented the world premiere of Zero Fucks Given (Rien à foutre), starring French actress Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue is the warmest colour, 2013), at the 2021 Critics’ Week as part of the 74th Cannes Film Festival.
In Zero Fucks Given, Cassandra (26 years old) is a flight attendant for a low-cost airline called Wing. Based in Lanzarote, she’s always willing to take on extra hours and carries out her duties with robotic efficiency. On the side, she just goes with the flow and floats between Tinder, parties and lazy days. When she suddenly gets dismissed, she is forced to return home.
The film is anchored by a stunning performance by Adèle Exarchopoulos, but what’s central to this film is its apparent organic shape. The film mixes up different types of footage – some shots were filmed with a smartphone, and uses documentary practices to film some scenes. The result feels spontaneous, and utterly natural.
We were therefore thrilled to meet the two writers and co-directors of the film to learn more about its genesis, and about the way the 5-people crew worked together with the actors.
