Cannes 2026: Young Japanese Cinema Vying For European Audience

Japan makes its boldest Cannes showing in decades, uniting Palme d’Or contenders, rising talent, and an expanded industry push toward Europe.

At the 79th Cannes Film Festival, Japan was the country of honour at the Marché du Film, the first East Asian country to hold the title since the initiative launched in 2022. Japan also has three films contending for the Palme d’Or for the first time in 25 years. With five films across the Official Selection and a government-backed market programme drawing nearly 40 percent more industry professionals than last year, Japan’s presence in 2026 is the most assertive in a generation.

Japan’s role at the Marché du Film, co-led by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), reflects a clear strategic intent: to move beyond festival prestige and build lasting commercial ties with the European market.

“We look forward to seeing Japan’s rich film culture, along with its emerging talents and technologies, shine even brighter internationally and contribute to the advancement of cinema both in Japan and around the world,” said Junichi Sakamoto, Chair of the Executive Committee for Japan, Country of Honour 2026, during the press conference here.

The films vying for the Palme d’Or are led by Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden, widely acclaimed as one of the festival’s standout works. The France-Japan co-production stars Virginie Efira as the director of a Parisian care facility and Tao Okamoto as a Japanese theatre director facing terminal cancer. With a running time of 196 minutes, it has been described as a quiet knockout.

Hirokazu Kore-eda, who won the Palme d’Or in 2018 for Shoplifters, returns with Sheep in the Box, a near-future sci-fi drama about bereaved parents given the opportunity to raise a humanoid android in the image of their deceased son.

Koji Fukada completes the trio with Nagi Notes, a Japan-Singapore-France production following a sculptor living under the influence of a past love. It marks Fukada’s first appearance in the main competition and has earned some of the warmest notices among the three Japanese entries.

Beyond the established masters, Cannes 2026 has spotlighted a younger generation eager to reach European audiences. The ‘Goes to Cannes’ night on 15 May presented five in-production Japanese projects to international sales agents and distributors. The Producers Network’s dedicated ‘Japanese Breakfast’ paired five emerging independent producers with five veterans from Japan’s major studios.

“The structural challenge remains real. Despite Japan’s towering artistic reputation, live-action Japanese cinema rarely achieves broad European theatrical distribution outside prestige releases. The Co-Production Meetings and industry summit are designed to accelerate that process,” said Toshikzau Nishigaya, Producer at Tokyo Theatres, Japan.

We have a lot of young talent in terms of directors and writers who have a lot to share about how they perceive living in Japan. This new way of looking inward resonates with the world, and we hope that Cannes will allow us, independent producers, to collaborate and present out-of-the-box ideas to audiences,” said Hiroyuki Yoshihara, an independent producer.

Whether this Cannes translates into lasting change will become clear in the seasons ahead. For now, with three directors in the hunt for the Palme d’Or and a new generation at the pitch tables, Japan has made its intentions unmistakably clear.
